Approaches: Approximately 8 miles round trip from the Lake Creek trailhead, three of them on trail and the rest off. You need a high-clearance vehicle to reach the trailhead.

Getting there

Everything to Lost Lake and Threebay applies here first. Three miles on trail from the Lake Creek trailhead to Lost, then off trail southeast.

Gander is only half a mile south of Threebay and 16 feet lower, so on paper it is nothing. It took us two hours and twenty minutes. We left Lost at half past eleven, were at Threebay by noon, and did not reach Gander until twenty past two.

That is the whole character of the ground out here. The lakes are close together and the walking between them is not.

The hike

Gander is about 17 acres at 8,310 feet, sitting a bit over a mile southeast of Lost.

Wyoming Game and Fish has no stocking record for it.

Going back, we returned the way we came, past Lost and out on the trail. Trying to cut off-trail toward Lily from this end is very difficult and not worth it.

The mosquitoes were relentless all day.

Tips & safety

• Navigation: Off trail from Lost Lake, southeast past Threebay. Half a mile from Threebay on the map, a long way on the ground.

• Camping: We walked this as a day hike and did not scout camping.

• Fishing: No WYG&F data. We did not fish it.

• Bugs: Terrible. Swat one and you get five.

• Getting out: Back past Lost the way you came. The off-trail line toward Lily is hard going.
