What Little Legs means

A few lakes on this site carry a Little Legs tag. It means one thing: we walked that lake with our own young kids, and they made it there and back on their own feet.

It is not a difficulty rating. We do not rate difficulty anywhere on this site. The same trail is a different trail depending on who is walking it, what the snow did that year, and how much sleep everybody got the night before.

Our kids hike often. They have a lot of miles on them, they are used to the altitude, and they are used to a day running longer than planned. A kid the same age with fewer miles may have a completely different afternoon on the same ground. Some of these lakes are short but steep, and one of them has no trail at all.

So read the tag as a data point, not a recommendation. Look at the distance, the elevation gain, and whether the route stays on trail, and make the call for your own family. You know your kids. We don't.

If a lake has no Little Legs tag, that usually just means we have not taken the kids there yet.
