Lake Vengence

Drainage: Stillwater
Approaches: Approximately 47 miles round trip from the Box Canyon trailhead. Off trail beyond Lake Surrender.
Elevation: 9,956 feet
Fish: No FWP data.
Coordinates: 45.26866, -110.01993
Bugs: Mosquitoes, just bad enough to be annoying.

Getting there

Trails to Lake Surrender, then cross-country southeast past Needle, Comet and Asteroid. No trail from Surrender on.

Vengence sits a sixth of a mile east of Hermit and 78 feet below it, at the far corner of the basin. We were at both within three minutes of each other, a little over four hours out from camp.

From Asteroid it is a third of a mile southwest and 500 feet up.

The hike

Vengence is small, a bit over an acre at 9,956 feet.

Montana FWP has no entry for it, so there is no depth, no acreage of their own, no fish record and no camping assessment.

It and Hermit are the two highest lakes in this pocket and the natural turnaround. Everything else in the basin sits below them.

Tips & safety

  • Navigation: No trail from Lake Surrender on. Southeast past Needle, Comet and Asteroid, then up. Hermit is a sixth of a mile west.

  • Camping: We turned around here and did not scout it. Asteroid has the camping FWP calls good, a third of a mile back down.

  • Fishing: No FWP data.

  • Bugs: Mosquitoes, annoying rather than bad.

Beartooth Echo

A Montana family of five walking to every named lake in the Absaroka-Beartooth. We only write up the ones we've stood at.
