Getting there

Trails to Lake Surrender, then cross-country southeast. Comet sits about half a mile southeast of Needle and 156 feet above it, a little under two miles from Surrender.

We came through here on the way out to the lakes above and again on the way back down, about an hour and three quarters apart. It is one of the four we passed repeatedly working that basin.

The hike

Comet is 8.9 acres at 9,347 feet.

Montana FWP has no entry for it, so there is no depth, no acreage of their own, no fish record and no camping assessment. Nothing has been published about this lake.

Asteroid is the next one on, three tenths of a mile south and 106 feet higher.

Tips & safety

  • Navigation: Off trail from Lake Surrender, southeast past Needle. Comet is half a mile past Needle.

  • Camping: We came through twice and did not scout it. Lake Surrender has the good camping, under two miles back down.

  • Fishing: No FWP data.

  • Bugs: Mosquitoes, annoying rather than bad.

Beartooth Echo

A Montana family of five walking to every named lake in the Absaroka-Beartooth. We only write up the ones we've stood at.
