Christmas Lake

Difficulty: Little Legs
Trip Type: Day Hike
Distance: ~1.5 miles round trip
Elevation: 10,094 feet
Coordinates: 44.96628, -109.42778
Time: ~35 minutes to hike back out
Access: No defined trail. Steep off-highway route.

Getting there

Park at the small, unmarked pull-out area along the highway that accommodates a few vehicles. The lake itself cannot be seen from the road.

The hike

From the highway pull-out, walk straight down toward the basin. The hike down to Christmas Lake is under a mile, but the route is very steep the entire way and lacks a clearly defined best path. Budget around 35 minutes for the steep hike back up to the highway, especially if carrying gear or young children.

Tips & safety

  • Navigation: Keep track of your entry point when descending. There is no established trail to follow back up to the road.

  • Fishing: Known for providing good fishing opportunities. WYG&F data is pending, and we didn’t catchany during our visit.
